100 visits by 50 unique visitors

This blog has been back on line for 5 days now. I am using Google Analytics to obtain statistics about the visitors of this website. Don’t be scared though; no personal information is collected. I thought it would be nice to discuss some of the statistics, as I have now had 100 visits by 50 unique visitors in total.

I should note that at this early age of my blog the results aren’t very trustworthy, but they should give you a rough sketch anyway.

Webbrowsers

Visitors of this blog seem to prefer Firefox (56.44%), although there have been a lot of visits by the Safari (28.71%) webbrowser as well. Chrome and Mozilla are a bit less popular among my visitors, both have a share of 5.94% individually. The most shocking however, is the low amount of visits by the Internet Explorer webbrowser. Less than 2% of visits to this blog have been made using this webbrowser. I can only applaud that. Okay, perhaps the results aren’t that shocking after all, knowing that this blog is primarily aimed at Linux users and/or developers.

Operating systems

44.55% of all visits were made by people using the Linux operating system. This is not a big surprise, as my blog is primarily aimed at Linux users. More surprisingly however: an astonishing 31.68% of all visits were made by people using the Mac OS X operating system. A possible explanation is that a lot of my blogposts are about cross-platform development and that a lot of the posts about Linux are applicable to Mac OS X as well (both operating systems are fully POSIX-compliant). Only 22.77% of my visitors use the Windows operating system.

PS: I have created a Request article page. If you are interested in something about Linux or programming or anything else that I might find interesting to write about, just tell me by posting a comment on that page!

    Sorry, I’m currently responsible for some of the Windows visits :-P

    I read your blog through via Planet Ubuntu. Do those readers enter the statistics as well?

    @Stefan No, because I wasn’t on Planet Ubuntu yet when I blogged about the statistics. And you only enter the statistics when you visit this website itself (reading from the planet does not count in the statistics)

    What needs to be pointed out is that while you had 23 visitors using Microsoft Windows, there were still only 2 users using Internet Explorer. Without a more detailed set of figures, you can’t say for certain which browser was used on which operating system (IE: IE on wine), but it’s clear the ratio of Safari to Mac users is a lot closer than IE to MS users. You can only assume it but looks like only 1 in 16 Microsoft Windows users is using IE. ;)

    The comparison you made between Windows and IE is interesting, so I had a look at the statistics of my blog.

    For the year 2009 I had 45% XP visitors and 42% Vista, that makes 87% Windows users, while 56.87% of my visitors use IE. My blog attracts more casual computer users, so maybe that declares the difference between my statistics and yours.

    Do you get also other information from Google Analytics? With PHPMyVisites, I can see how people got to my blog, what they searched on google, what posts they read most, and so on.

    @Frank P
    Yes, I get much more information than that. But there’s not enough information like that yet, because this blog is still very new. I will keep everyone updated though.

    I usually read your blog via Planet Ubuntu rss feeds.

    Since I have added my blog to a few planets I now have about 100 visits a day, so I might post an update containing some more useful statistics later. Maybe when I have reached 1000 or 5000 total visits.
